While you probably won't have one of these, I wanted to share a little gadget my grandfather made for Mommom to use when making Short Bread.  He carved this out of walnut and it is used to prick the Short Bread before baking.  Normally you would prick it several times with a fork, but this allows you to do it all in one step.

Pricking Short Bread before baking

2 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
3 heaping teaspoons baking powder
1/3 cup shortening
3/4 cup milk (or enough to get a proper dough)

Preheat oven to 450. Mix all ingredients well, form dough, and let sit for at least half an hour. Mommom said that gives them a smoother texture. Cut biscuits with cutter and put on ungreased cookie sheet. Poke tops lightly with a fork. Bake about 10 minutes, or until brown.
Completed Short Bread Here's one of the short bread biscuits on its side, a plate with some buttered short bread, and the biscuit pick. These are good eaten with Mommom's vegetable soup or any type of soup or chili.
